Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about the vat calculator answered.

What countries use VAT?+
Over 160 countries use VAT or a similar goods and services tax. Major economies include UK (20%), Germany (19%), France (20%), Australia (10% GST), Canada (5% GST), UAE (5%), Singapore (9% GST), and India (GST at 5%, 12%, 18%, 28%). The USA is a notable exception using state-level sales taxes instead.
How do I calculate VAT on an invoice?+
For a B2B invoice, add VAT to your net price. If you charge $1,000 for services and VAT is 20%, your invoice total is $1,200 showing $1,000 net and $200 VAT separately. VAT-registered businesses can reclaim input VAT they paid on business purchases.
What is the difference between VAT and sales tax?+
VAT is collected at each stage of production and distribution, with businesses reclaiming input tax. Sales tax is collected only at the final point of sale to the consumer. VAT is more common globally while sales tax is used primarily in the USA. Both result in similar final consumer prices.
What is reverse charge VAT?+
Reverse charge shifts the VAT accounting responsibility from the seller to the buyer. It applies to certain B2B transactions within the EU and UK, construction services, and cross-border digital services. The buyer accounts for VAT rather than paying it to the supplier.
